Market Brief: General Storage Market Overview
The vegetable oil and chemical markets are rising with reduced tank storage capacity available all around the globe. We see tanks being offered firm for 1 or 2 days only and the cargo owners have to decide quickly to take the tank or the tank will be offered to somebody else instead. The storage contracts are in average for a duration of about 6-12 months, which creates opportunities for new business.
In the oil and mineral market, the situation is completely different. Contracts are in average for minimum 1 year and there is plenty space available in today’s market in any region. Rates are the lowest we have seen in 4 to 5 years, which also means it is a good time to enter into a contract or to re-negotiate or tender your storage volumes. The contango players have left the arena, but luckily for the terminals there are enough producers and supply chain (modality changes) plus strategic storage requests to have the terminals (around 85%) occupied. The financial results for oil terminals are effected heavily due to the combination of lower rates, lower occupancy levels and lower throughput figures.
