Stolt Completes Expansions at Integrated State-of-the-Art Storage Terminal and Tank Container Depot in Moerdijk

October 3, 2016 [Stolthaven Moerdijk] - Stolthaven Moerdijk, an integrated bulk liquid terminal and ISO container depot that is part of the Stolt-Nielsen global network, today announced the completion of a major four-year project aimed at creating a state-of-the-art gateway to the ARA region.

“What we’ve created here is a one-stop-logistics solution for specialty products, by integrating in one location the capabilities of Stolthaven Terminals and Stolt Tank Containers,” said Edward De Vos, Commercial Manager. “The synergies we’ve implemented here save time and reduce costs for customers, while contributing to their improved supply-chain performance.”

After acquiring the terminal in 2012, Stolt made major investments to upgrade the safety, quality, efficiency and functionality of the facility, including the installation of a state-of-the-art stationary firefighting system, ISO container cleaning & repair capabilities and a phase 1 terminal expansion of 14,000 cubic meters of tanks dedicated to acids, base oils and other high flash products.

The facility is superbly situated mid-way between Antwerp and Rotterdam, providing excellent access to both major ports, yet removed from the congestion. Barges and coasters can easily access the jetty at the terminal, and there is efficient access to both railroads and highways.

“Our goal was to create a facility is all about flexibility and added service features,” said Edward. “If a tank container cargo needs to be heated before it can be discharged into a bulk tank, if truck tanks need to be cleaned before loading or after discharge, if drumming services are required, we can do it all right here on site.”

Stolt Tank Containers opened its central ARA depot for cleaning, repairs and heating of ISO containers in 2015. With over 1,100 positions for storage of full and empty ISOs, extensive cleaning capabilities and multiple heating methods, the range of products offered by the depot is a significant complement to the facility’s bulk storage capabilities. Integrated bulk liquid storage and tank container services enable customers to reduce costs in their supply chain by avoiding unnecessary transport.

“This facility is truly a one-stop shopping solution,” added Edward.

Phase 2 expansion & Rail

The recent completion of phase 2 adds another 16,000 cubic meters of capacity in eight stainless steel tanks of 2,000 cubic meters each. The tank pit is built to the latest PGS29 regulations and permitted for all classes of hazardous liquid cargoes. All of the tanks at Stolthaven Moerdijk are fitted with dedicated pumps and pipeline systems to reduce the risk of contamination. As part of the project, the old rail connection at the site was revived and upgraded, adding an additional modality to the site.

Drumming Lines

Simultaneous to the commissioning of Tank Pit 6, Stolt upgraded its drumming lines to enhance capacity and allow for more flexibility. Combined with a new vapour-treatment system, the automated lines are now capable of drumming any product classes directly from the tanks, ISO containers or trucks. This provides significant flexibility for distributors, right to the very ends of their supply chains. The 7,500 square meters PGS15 allows for temporary storage of the hazardous goods before they reach their final destinations.

One-Stop-Shop

The Moerdijk is the first site in Stolt’s global network to offer clients a one-stop-shopping option for storage and tank container services. Teams from Stolthaven Terminals and Stolt Tank Containers work together to assist clients with their supply chain requirements and to increase efficiencies through effective and coordinated planning and management.

Continuing to Improve Flexibility

“We are focused on meeting the evolving requirements of our clients by continuing to look at smart expansions and upgrades,” said Edward De Vos, Commercial Manager at Stolthaven Moerdijk. “We will continue to invest in flexibilities that give our customers more choices to more efficiently manage their supply chains and reduce their costs.”
