resources required in construction of a tank farm

I am doing my assignment about project management in the construction of a tank farm. In my assignment, i need to build 6 underground reinforced concrete tank, pipework to connects them and associated roads and sewage facilities. I have been given 18 labourers, 16 carpenter, 10 steel fixer and 6 excavator as my resources. Now here is my question, besides the 4 resources given, what other resources that will be required in order to increase the efficiency of the construction of a tank farm? There are no specifications on what type of tank it is. Thanks in advance.

3 days ago by Deric of student | Your answer | Read full discussion

Dhananjoy Mishra/Fujairah I exepct depth is not much. Otherwise you will require sheetpiling contractor, orforce for the same with crane etc to do the work. You will definitely need waterproofing for the tanks and painting.
you will be requiring hydrotsting of these tanks- resources related to the same. tanks must have some nozzels by which you need to do the in and out operation. what about pumps etc.

PIping drainage

Good morning from Dubai

We have an issue as far the marine operations in our terminals. Is there any regulation/requirement cargo pipes at the jetties or the marine side of the terminal in general to be drained after the loading/discharging operations with a ship and the disconnection of the MLA and/or cargo hose?

Thank you in advance

Salim Bilawala Dear Nikitoros,

As far as UAE is oncerned, the drainage of hoses after operations is for own operational safety. If you can plug the ends w/o any leakage, you may do so. It is safety which is more of concern. If you need to discuss further, pl. feel free to contact me at 050-8950852 or bsa65@hotmail.com.

I have worked for 40 yrs. in operations and have come across such problems in UAE.

Tank Terminal

What are the components which comprises for any tank terminal automation?

2 months ago by Vivek of ITL | Your answer | Read full discussion

Salim Bilawala Dear Vivek,

For automation of terminal, it depends upon how much amount of automation is require right from feeding orders/invoices,gauging system, delivery system where full automation starts from tank quantity upto delivered quantity and it works out the quantity both at natural ad standard temp. The tank gauging system works out quantity withdrawn and delivery gives qty. deld. and you can work out diff. based on ASTM table which are already fed in the system. Further details can be provided on request with full guidance on automation.

2 months ago | Reply

Dhananjoy Mishra/Fujairah The above has covered almost all of the quantification issues. Besides to run a terminal effectively, you may have automation on - Pump operating, Valves operating using actuators, Fire detection and Fire suppression system which will include the tankfarm and also your CCR/switch gear area and Foam system, Linear heat detection, leak detection, Energy management system, Heating system, Emergency shutdown etc. If you have jetties under your control, you need to add up a few on jetty operating also.

Value of Tanks

I am trying to value 12 bulk oil storage tanks in Kuwait........we will be selling this facility and want to determine the value of our tanks. Can you Help?

2 months ago by Daniel Hall of NEBB Institute | Your answer | Read full discussion

Dhananjoy Mishra/Fujairah technical specification is a major input to find out the value of an asset. hence, you need to compile all design/spec of the tanks to do the work.
In addition, the location, market etc will influence the final valuation. So you need to carry out a due diligence .

2 months ago | Reply

Salim Bilawala Dear Daniel,

As stated by Dhananjoy, everything depends on the design of tanks, cost of construction at the location, amount of automation implemented and so on.

I am consultant for Oil Storage Terminals after having worked for terminals for 40 yrs.and can help you to greater extent in working out the details since I had been also handling tank hiring activity in UAE. You may write directly to me at bsa65@hotmail.com

Unloading of Naphtha from Ship to Truck (road)

Sir,
Is there anyone unloading naphtha (liquid) from ship to truck (road transport)- directly in the port itself without having any terminal (control station). whether is it possible?

2 months ago by Mani Vannan Sulur Selvaraj of SPIC | Your answer | Read full discussion

Salim Bilawala Dear Manni,

It is possible to unload directly into trucks like you load in the trucks at storage terminals with safety precautions like flow rate, size of hoses, if any. Which is the location and what unloading arrangement has been made.

I am a consultant for storage terminals having worked in this field for last 40 yrs. I have been providing consultancy for terminal set up and other facilities having handled vessel discharges for many years.

MANI VANNAN SULUR SELVARAJ Thank you sir. i have sent a mail to your mail id

Dhananjoy Mishra/Fujairah Process wise no issue. logistics needs to seen. Economic viability is more an issue here. if you even discharge a barge of 4000cbm, you will require 7-10( 40-60 cbm sizes) tankers loading simultaneously for 10-12 hrs, which is normally a discharging time for a barge. And for each tanker you will have stoppage and restart, which increases the vessels' time alongside enormously and will make thing uneconomical.
While we design a system, we need to take this into consideration and hence is not a suggested idea although technical design could be possible.

MANI VANNAN SULUR SELVARAJ thank you for your reply. whether the rules will permit to unload. in the world any one is unloading like this.

Liquid Fuel Leakage Detection

Would like to know what type of system does the Storage terminals uses for leakage detection in the storage tanks.

2 months ago by Adron of Finnlayson Technology | Your answer | Read full discussion

Salim Bilawala There are various systems followed by each storage terminal. One system is you use tale-tale system whereby pipe under the foundation is laid till the center sump protruding out of foundation and is routinely checked if there is any leakage of tank.

Another system is electronic which is incorporated in gauging system and there leakage detection alarm which you can set at whatever level you want to set.

LNG Tank Storage rental rates

Hi there, i have a question in relation to the LNG tank storage rental rates especially in the South East Asia region. I noted that rates in certain places is only in regards to throughput and mmbtu units...however the storage capacity is in cubic meters....how should I reconcile this? Also any ideas on the rates per cbm?

Thanks

4 months ago by o&gresearch of research | Your answer | Read full discussion

Joost Smits Hi,

LNG can have various origins, each with its own quality. The higher the quality, the more energy can be derived from the gas. However, the volume remains the same. Therefore, some contracts (e.g. the amount of energy you can deliver to a network) are in MMBTU and others (e.g. the volume you want to store in a tank) are in cbm.

If you know the amount of energy the gas contains (e.g. in The Netherlands 1 cbm equals 35.17 MJ) you can calculate the MMBTU to cbm value.

Joost

Amanullah Khan Gate terminal: A storage and handling company

The growing demand for natural gas cannot be met without an increase in imports. N.V. Nederlandse Gasunie (Gasunie) and Koninklijke Vopak N.V. (Vopak) therefore decided in 2005 to develop Gate terminal (Gas Access To Europe), an LNG import terminal. The terminal’s functions are: receipt, a buffer between receipt and continuous supply of natural gas, regasification, supply. Imported LNG will be regasified and stored under pressure at the terminal before it is supplied at a constant rate to the Dutch transmission network. There will be no change in the composition of the product. The main functions of the LNG import terminal as a whole will therefore be storage and handling; no waste will be produced. The terminal will consist of three storage tanks, two jetties and a process area where the LNG will be regassified. Each tank will have a capacity of 180,000 m3. The total project costs for the LNG terminal will be about € 800 million. The throughput capacity of Gate terminal will be 12 billion m3 of natural gas per annum. The terminal will start its commercial operations as of September 2011. The LNG terminal’s throughput capacity can be increased to 16 billion m3 per annum in the future

Customer S requires: 3 x 30,000 bbls. p/mth Fuel Oil Rmg-380
Customer X requires 2 x 20,000 bbls p/mth Fuel Oil 240 Ssf
Customer Y requires 45,000 bbls p/mth Fuel Oil 300 Ssf. Storage capacity 3 Fuel Oil tanks of 20,000 bbls storage.
Customer Z requires 150,000 bbls. of Fuel oil 240 SSf per mth. Production is 12,000 bbls per day
Import 3 x 50,000 bbls p/mth 240 Fuel oil Ssf.
number of minimum storage is 10 days.
How many additional tanks are needed.

Ps is there a xls calculation sheet for

11 months ago by Mark Funda of Staatolie | Your answer | Read full discussion

Joost Smits Dear Mark, if you want to calculate this the right way you need to use simulation modeling. Excel isn't capable enough to include all complexities of a tank farm, such as variability in vessel arrivals, pipelines/pumps/header that cannot be used due to "already-in-use"/maintenance etc.

You can try to use excel to get an idea, but I wouldn't recommend it if you want to calculate the exact number of tanks (and potential other infrastructure) you need.

11 months ago by Jerome Fonin of BRAIN E&C | Your answer | Read full discussion

Dhananjoy Mishra It depends on the engineering and spec that you want to follow. how much automation you want to use, whether you need a pigging, how far is the delivery points, whether you have a jetty loading or truck loading, power source etc., how exhaustive is the fire system, you want to use aluminum dome/ aluminum floating or external floating roof etc etc.
As a ball park figure, you can arrange USD 15 M w/o land cost.

Floating roof tank

Hi,

My questions..

1. Can I operate floating roof tank Frequently below Floating zone i.e empty out full produce to utilize maximum capacity before receipt next cargo.
2. Which is more efficient to store PMS Dome roof or Floating roof for maximum utilization.

Thanks in advance

RAJESH

11 months ago by RAJESH of NIPCO Plc | Your answer | Read full discussion

Dhananjoy Mishra When you operate below floating zone, you are increasing the vapour emission. hence loss increases. which is directly related to the product you are handling, ambient condition etc etc.
also in places, it is environmental issue, statutory approvals are required for each case you land the floating roof on its legs. you need to consider all these issues before deciding.
If you elaborate little on PMS dome, then I can share my view. Is it a simple dome roof?
your selection in between Dome roof and floating roof mainly depends on the product you handle, ambient condition and the statutory requirements.

Dhananjoy Mishra You have asked few questions and mostly requires elaboration.
There are different types of Floating roof, - Single deck pontoon type, Double deck, Buoy type. The roofs could be external FR, Internal Floating roof . If it is internal, it can be Pan type, pontoon type, even can be of sandwich panels. IFR could be aluminum, MS etc.
Although all these floating roofs operates on same basic principle, still there are certain differences in between them and hence the internals also differ accordingly.
so, you need to work accordingly on the type you want to choose and then can detail it further. Although, to choose the type, you need to finalise the requirements first.

Export terminal

Hi;
I am working on a project for exporting gasoline and diesel via a nearby port. The storage tanks are about 11km away from the port/jetty.
We are considering loading the ships by pumping directly from the tanks to ship at the port/jetty 11km away.
Does anyone have an opinion about this?
Is the distance 11km too far to load ships directly?
What are the limitations in terms of maximum distance between the storage tanks and the port/jetty?
Are there any examples of gasoline and diesel export terminals having long distance between the tanks and port/jetty?

Thanks;
Richard.

11 months ago by Richard of CALEX | Your answer | Read full discussion

paresh shah Dear Richard,There are many locations where Terminals are +10km from jetty & they do pipeline loading. According to me your 11km distance is not difficult to pump however same will be dependent on the Pipeline size, pipeline route (less number of bends), rate of pumping required (need be you may have to install Booster on pipeline route after determining pressure drop point).
You may take any local consultant advise to work out on this.

11 months ago | Reply

Richard Thank you Paresh. I agree with your thoughts. Can you perhaps give a few names or locations of these terminals doing pipeline loading from this type of distance?
Much appreciated.

Dhananjoy Mishra Important point is that booster pump. If you are planning for a Third party terminal, you may have to strip the tanks regularly. that will create issue for pumping. Specially with products like Gasoline.

Calculating petroleum storage tank throughput

I cannot find a definitive definition what throughput is comprised of or considered to be. I assume that any and all activity, product coming into a tank and leaving a tank, would be considered throughput - which would be different than what inventory turnover is. However, when I enter actual incoming and outgoing gallons (absolute values, not “netted” totals) for two of our tanks into the EPA TANKS 4.0.9d software, the working and breathing losses produced by the program are much higher than what we’ve actually experienced. Consequently, I’m trying to determine what the industry considers throughput to be so I can be sure I’m entering the correct numbers into the program for the calculation.
In the following example, what would the correct throughput quantities be for tanks 1 & 2?
Tank 1: Unleaded gasoline
Beginning quantity on hand = 200,000
Sales = (50,000)
Receipt of product = 75,000
Transfer to tank 2 = (150,000)

12 months ago by Dan Owen of CPD Alaska LLC | Your answer | Read full discussion

Joost Smits Hi Dan,

in our project we use the following definition of throughput: amount of products being imported and exported to and from the terminal. Using our definition, the throughput in your example would be 125,000 (50,000 out and 75,000 in). Internal transfers are not part of the throughput.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,
Joost

oil storage prices in Fujairah

I am looking to get an indicative pricing for storage of different types of oil in fujairah and whether prices differ greatly between clean oil, fuel oil and crude. I have spoken to a few players and have gotten quotes of about USD4.75 per cm per month spot price, and about USD4 per cm per month for long term contracts (these are only ball park figures and it is my understanding they may differ depending on the type of product, the capacity required, and the duration of storage). I would like to know how big the variations could be and whether these would change depending on other services such as heating, blending, etc.

Due diligence on tank farm integrity

Could someone kindly advice us on what type of integrity checks should be conducted on a used tank farm terminal before purchase. A breakdown of checks, cost and timelines will be appreciated urgently. Thanks

2 years ago by Victor of Earthoil | Your answer | Read full discussion

Rob Luijendijk Dear Victor,

What you are querying about is really a so-called Due Diligence procedure or at least part thereof. Prior to a party buying a terminal and depending on what sort of acquisition this concerns (share transaction or asset transaction) an extensive investigation into all relevant aspects of a terminal is conducted, normally by outside experts in the different fields of expertise that come into play. Areas (high level) that need to be reviewed are, at least: Technical Operational, Environmental, Permits, Qualifications, Legal, Management, Financial, Commercial and perhaps other aspects that are specific to local circumstances. Depending on the size of a terminal and the level of detail required by the potential buyer , a full Due Diligence process may take from a few days to up to more than a week. Our mother company has extensive experience with Due Diligence processes of tank terminals.

Storage Tank

Would like to know the cost drivers and cost structure/cost model of the Storage Tank industry (depreciation, labor, insurance...)

-98299883805 seconds ago by Valentina Peirano of The Smart Cube | Your answer | Read full discussion

Arifin /Malaysia Depreciation & amortisation should be around 40%-60% of TOTAL expenses(excluding financial costs).
Labour/staff cost around 15%-25%.
Insurance premium generally a function of tank terminal construction cost(EPC). May take 0.5% to 1% of EPC per annum.

For estimate of operating cost OPEX (which exclude depreciation and financial cost), USD 1 to USD 1.50 per cubic meter per month can be used as a guide. If it is 1,000,000 cbm, take say USD1-1.5million per month on OPEX.

above vs. below ground tank farm for finished oil

gasoline and diesel tank farms located in Shanxi province china are claimed by the owner to be partially underground - rail access for oil wholesaler, 100K mt, 70k mt, and 50k metric tons in 3 facilities. Is this highly unlikely construction, as the tanks seem to be above ground and 1/3 the stated capacity, with about 5/4 of height to diameter ratio, most tanks 40 to 60 feet diameter.

Please elaborate on your question. If I understand correctly you are looking for a study to determine a location for a terminal; and if you have selected the location, the size/characteristics of the terminal.

Simulation modeling is a good tool to perform such studies. Examples of such project can be found here: www.systemsnavigator.com

ICT Requirements

What is the ICT requirements for terminals?how much its averge cost

2 years ago by suhaimi of NowaVentures | Your answer | Read full discussion

Carlos PEREIRA Hello,

I believe that one of the first aspect that you would have to establish is the level of automation that you will have on your terminals.
In general petroleum operations are much more automated than chemicals.
You might have to consider purchasing of a Management System / ERP to manage your operations and customers invoicing (except if your terminal is small and/or not very automated).
It is difficult to provide an average cost without knowing the characteristics of your terminal.

Best Regards

2 years ago | Reply

Joost Smits Dear Suhaimi,

As mentioned by Carlos, there are a lot of ICT systems at terminals. It is impossible to state an average cost, but I can give you some areas in which such systems are used:

- decision support systems
- planning and scheduling
- HSE
- Training
- ERP systems
- communications

Joost

Naeem Ansari KSA N2 gas can be used and it is ideal for fixed roof tank either empty or full (at safe level) Gasoline vapours will remain inside, N2 not only protect unnecessary vapour losses but will keep the product cool and away from explosive mixture.
Ideally, Internal Floating roof tanks are the most suitable tank for Gasoline, IFR can also be installed into fixed roof tanks.

Rent Price

Hi, I need to know about the average rent price of terminal tank particulary crude-use in Singapore and general information such as minimum rent size of the terminal tank for my graduate study. Is there any website or organization that I can collect such data? Thanks

2 years ago by JO of AA | Your answer | Read full discussion

Rob Luijendijk Dear Jo, there are really no (public) websites with that sort of information. There are instrutions (research bureaus, consultants) that have (inidicative) rate levels, but again, not in the public domain. Also note that crude storage (at the receiving ens, line Singapore) is largely in the hands of refineries who do not store crude for commercial purposes but for feeding the refinery. Commercial crude storage, unlike that of petroleum products or chemicals, is not frequently practiced. If not for and within a refinery complex, storage of crude is done for strategic purposes or it is done to get the crude from the well to, e.g. an export port. Crude storage is rather seen as a cost than as a source of revenue/profit.

Breakdown of typical power consumption at a terminal

What would the power consumption be for a typical terminal? Is there a rough correlation between consumed power and storage capacity? What percentages would apply to pumps and heating systems?

2 years ago by Mike Moore of Colfax Fluid Handling | Your answer | Read full discussion

Sanjay Anand There is no thumb rule for typical power consumption in a terminal. Also sorry there is no corelation between pwer and capacity. The power consumption mainly depends on throughput or tank turns, capacity number & type of pumps, heating, blending and ancillary services. Typically 75% will be allocated to pumps and heating system.

Marketing Plan for new petroleum storage terminal

Hello guys, would anyone by any chance have worked on a 'Marketing Plan' for promoting a new petroleum storage terminal? We are looking to draw up one for our new terminal to raise awareness in a market where several other marketers/operators have long existed. Will appreciate a comprehensive document sent to info@earthoilgroup.com or victorohakim@gmail.com

Tank Farm/ Depot and Stock Management

Hello, can you please advise me with format/template for calculating tank utilization and stock management and controls. We wish to gain some expert insight as to best practices in this area of both manual and automatic stock management and recording for modern tank farm facility.

-156301585117 seconds ago by victor ohakim of Earthoil Petroleum Services Limited | Your answer | Read full discussion

Carlos PEREIRA Hello Victor,

You question is quite general, and I fear that it would be difficult to provide a perfect answer in a few lines.
However, I will try to give some insights based on my personal experience

TANK UTILIZATION :
As you would imagine, in order to build such an indicator, you would need following information :
- Tank Capacity : Commercial and/or Technical depending on the destination of the indicator Customer and/or Internal Staff
- Movements concerning the Tank

STOCK MANAGEMENT :
Your stock management will be done based on following aspects :
- (Petroleum) Product Characteristics
- Tank Characteristics (including Strapping Tables)
- Calculation Method : in case you realize Tank Measurements you could probably use API (American Petroleum Institute) Tables

CONTROLS :
Your Tanks certainly have Safety margins and you can use this information to avoid overfilling.

MANUAL/AUTO STOCK MANAGEMENT AND RECORDING
If your Terminal has a high level of automation (tank radars guages, presets, PLC, ...) you should be confortable to implement AUTOMATIC Stock Management and Recording.
Anyway you would probably need a Terminal Management System to manage and follow movements, stocks, ...

Hopefully this summary will help you,

Best Regards

victor ohakim Dear Carlos PEREIRA,

Thank you for your support. I was hoping to get detailed insights like templates and calculations for the manual recording and reconciliation of daily operations at a petroleum depot warehousing Gasoline, Diesel and Kerosene (All of No.3 X 5,000MT Tank capacity each). Specific details and sample(scanned) documents and case studies will be highly appreciated.

I should be able to build my business case and track business activity and profitability using the templates. I hope this isn’t too much to ask.

Thank you for the support.

operation problems

In our Terminal based in Tunisia, we have 2 big problems in our operation systeme :

1- before each operation (transfert, loadind or discharge) on a tank we need to use blind flanges to insur isolation of the tanks. Because with valves we are not sure of the effective isolation of the tank.
2- In our offshore operations we use pig with 2 caps to push the product using water. I m not sure thet is the best way to do. Do you have any other idéa.

Please can you give us any suggestion or solution to this questions ?

Do you know any tank terminal that we can visit in europe or any other country to help us to resolve those points.

Storage Terminal

Dear Sir,

Greeting!

We are currently doing a study on Storage Terminal. Would appreciate it if you can assist us with the following questions:

1) Are transhipment commonly provided at Storage Terminal?

2) How similar are the storage terminal business model and operation different from the business model and operation of container port?

3) Are throughput charges considered as handling fee for transferring products from vessel to tanks and vice-versa.

4) We noted that in the storage service agreement, terminal operator provides a certain capacity of free throughputs. Is this practice common in the industry. Are they negotiable?

5) How do they determine the amount of free throughputs. Do they vary between customers or is a standard capacity given by the terminal.

6) Does the amount of free throughput affect the storage rate?

Thank you very much.

2 years ago by ling Soh Lian of IRAS | Your answer | Read full discussion

Carlos PEREIRA Hello, Please kindly find below some insights based on my personal experience :

3) I would say Yes. The throughput charges are dependent on the quantity of product handled in movements.

4) Indeed, this is a common practice in this industry to have throughputs as part of the commercial aspects of a contract. And of course, this is a matter of negotiation.

5) Again, this is a matter of negotiation. And of course, this cary vary between customers.

6) As these two items are commercial related, I would say Yes. And once again it depends on the negotiation of the contract between a customer and a storage terminal.

-152830378708 seconds ago | Reply

p 1) any Terminal with product in/out pumping facilities through dock line can provide Transshipment subject to local laws.
2) to my understanding except the quantum Bulk/Container & In/Out handling operation, there is no different procedure for Custom Clarence Or Outward movement of cargo.
3)Yes
4) Yes it is common to provide one throughput free (based on capacity hired). same is negotiable.
5) as above
6) yes, after all it is specific earning which operator look for from total contracted operation.

Oil Storage Terminals

Hi I have a few questions that i would like proffesional guidance on:
1) Besides for Simple Storage what other value added services do petroleum storage terminals provide (and earn revenue from)?

2) How is oil physically transfered from truck/rail/ship into the storage and visa versa- what/how many processess does the oil go through?

3) How is the oil separated?

4) Do you have product/crude flexible tanks and how much more expensive are they.

Thanks i really appreciate the advice and feedback you provide on this site.

2 years ago by Yos of independent | Your answer | Read full discussion

Jon Watson Terminals storing bunker fuels often add value by blending. So, if they have 500cSt HFO and distillate fuels they can blend these to create any of the intermediate fuels.
This can be designed for splash/batch blending on the barge, or splash/batch or inline blending in the terminal.

2 years ago via LinkedIn | Reply

Mark Levitski If I understood your 1) question correctly the added services among other “simple storage” things are: Water separation (bio fuels, jet fuel); Homogenysing (mixing, air injection etc.); Blending; Adding additives; Sluge control; Sampling services and quality control; Emission control/ reduction; Heating; Product filters.

Unloading Pumpsets

Have you ever used Unloading Oil Centrifugal Pumpsets of Capacity 1000KL/hr?

-46735843960 seconds ago by Auro Bhattacharya of ABT Engg n Consultancy Ltd | Your answer | Read full discussion

Brian Savage We have provided centrifugal pump sets ( 3 pumps to system) for 3500 and 4200 gallons per minute. Connections/line configurations on board greatly influence flow rate. Tanks being served and associated dynamic discharge heads also influence varying flow rates. Thus we see 3 versus 2 pumps being used. We only work with viscosities less then 35 cts.

3 years ago via LinkedIn | Reply

Keith Sharp If you are unloading from a road tanker, positive displacement pumps are preferred as they have a much greater capacity to handle air without vapour locking and cavitating.

Storage Terminals

1) We noted that the indicative storage rate in SE Asia is about $6.50/cbm. Is this rate for pure storage with specific throughputs given per year? If not, what does it include? Does it include services like blending or heating.

2) Does the terminal allow tank sharing between different customers storing the same product.

3) How different is the terminal operation for petroleum products and petrochemical products?

3 years ago by Ling Soh Lian of IRAS | Your answer | Read full discussion

Anon 1) it depends on the contract. $6.50/cbm seem to be more for petrochemical products. At that price range, it might be more for pure storage.

2) it depends. Most terminals will not allow it so as to maximise revenue. But it is possible as long as all parties agree. I believe Vopak is looking into this

3) Petroleum products usually use bigger tanks and thus the rates are usually cheaper. Operation-wise, most are similar. Mostly, it is a scale issue.

2 years ago | Reply

Corey Rogers 1) Agreements can be negotiated with many different charge out options. Commonly rates are structured to include - base price/m3 + throughput + shipping + payback for facility modifications (If required) + blending + drumming. Basically-you pay for your tank + labour + energy to service your needs as a customer. The rates get better the longer the contract & how good your negotiation skills are.

2) Tank sharing is generally allowed if customers agree and products are obviously of a similar grade. Very common on petroleum terminals. Not so much in chemical terminals due quality risks.

3) Essentially the terminals are very similar as noted above however, petroleum products are dirty compared to chemicals and have simpler handling processes. The price/m3 will be much lower in a petroleum terminal.

Global Storage Capacity

Can you please confirm the global total storage capacity for (a) crude oil, (b) refined petroleum products and (c) gas?

3 years ago by Dr Graeme K. Frith of Exocyte | Your answer | Read full discussion

Lewis Bates Gas I have no connection with, but it occurs to me that storage capacity and storage use are two different figures, if a terminal has 1 million CuM refilled every week is a much more important measure than the strategic storage tanks which are refilled maybe once per year, or even tanks that (these days) are too expensive to fill. Refineries are not good at indicating the usability of their tankage - Terminals are better - but not much.

I am interested in aggregated numbers (not specific details) of crude and oil product storage tank capacity in the United States that is owned (directly or indirectly) or leased by Morgan Stanley Group (or a subsidiary thereof, such as Transmontaigne). We would be happy to provide you full attribution in the story, which will be read by thousands of oil industry professionals worldwide.
I look forward to your response.
Thank you

oligopolie

Geachte heer/mevrouw,

3 years ago by Dick Hoogstrate of ROC Zeeland | Your answer | Read full discussion

how much/

How much of the world's oil storage capacity is leased or owned by the world's investment banks?

3 years ago by Hugh Magbie of North Star | Your answer | Read full discussion

Rob Luijendijk Hi Hugh, this depends to a large extent on how you define "oil storage capacity". If you take the total global oil storage capacity (dedicated/refinery + independent), their share is small. However, probably your question refers to the independent tank storage industry only (= about 450/500 M m³, max 20% of the total), the share of the investment banks is larger because we think that their share in the dedicated/refinery storage industry is negligible. Still, for the independent tank storage industry, a distinction has to be made between "owned" and "leased" or both at the same time. With respect to "owned", another factor is owned directly or owned indirectly.
Probably because of these ambiguities it is very difficult to say what there share is. Two things are rather sure though: it is not insignificant and it is rising.

Storage capacity

What is the crude oil storage capacity in the Northern Atlantic / Arctic area?

3 years ago by Thordur Gunnarsson of Private | Your answer | Read full discussion

Rob Luijendijk There will be crude storage capacity where 1) crude is explored (found), 2) where there are refineries, and 3) in (big) ports for logistical reasons or trading purposes. This website and its database focus on independent tank storage, storage accessible for third parties. All crude storage prior to the refineries is rarely in the hands of independent operators, virtually always operated by the crude exploration companies and/or the well known oil companies. This is the reason why relarively little information is found in this database. It is not our focus as we are trying to put transparency in the tank storage market that can be used by third parties. Nevertheless, you will find in our database a number of crude storage facilities that offer their services, albeit often on a limited scale, for third party crude storage. You can make a Registration at our website. With that you create a so-called Credit Account (with 100 free credit points) which will allow you to search our database. Once the 100 points are used up you can buy any additional number of points (€ 0.25/point) with a credit card.

Rob Luijendijk We estimate that the global tank storage capacity is around 1,800 million m³. Furthermore we estimate that as part of this total a maximum of 400 million m³ is capacity operated as independent/commercial tank storage capacity. Generally speaking, independent/commercial tank storage capacity is the capacity that is not operated by oil companies. Oil company's capacity is called dedicated storage capacity and is generally used for the relevant oil company only. Independent/commercial capacity is also referred to as third party storage capacity. Important to understand is that products stored at independent terminals is never owned by the owner/operator of the terminal, these products are always owned by third parties, the terminal's clients.

Rob Luijendijk Tank utilization can be measured in various ways; per m³ holding capacity of one or more tanks (filling rate), to the extent that the throughput capacity is used (x cubic meters or x tons in and out of a tank per period), or the financial perforemance in relation to a budget.

However, there are also independent tank terminal facilities that handle crude but this number is small relative to the other two sectors.

Tariffs economics

Tariffs for tank terminals is based on what? is it based on throughput? number of days?
please help with this inquiry

3 years ago by Moahmmed ahmed of PSU university | Your answer | Read full discussion

Rob Luijendijk A standard contract form stipulates a fee per cubic meter per annum or another period. These fees normally include a number of throughputs during that same period. If this number of throughputs is exceeded an additional throughput fee applies. If the pre-agreed number of throughputs is not reached, the original fee agreed for this contract remains unchanged. Only excess throughputs are being charged extra. Please see also my answer to Tank Leasing Price question.

Tank leasing price

Hello, I want to know about how to assign the lease price for a tank? If can tell me where I can find information about prices and pricing structures would be great.

3 years ago by Rubén Jovel of ARF | Your answer | Read full discussion

Rob Luijendijk Tank storage fees are based on supply and demand. In other words, a lot of demand in a tight market leads to high storage fees. Another approach is of course that storage fees are based on operational, financial, overhead costs for a terminal. The total cost (e.g. per annum) divided by the total storage capacity results in (minimum) storage fee per cubic meter per annum. Furthermore, it has to be taken into consideration that not all capacity will be leased out permanently, so a correction for an expected occupancy level applies as well.

b) Planned capacity Rotterdam – 965K m3; Amsterdam – 770K m3; Antwerp – 963K m3 and ARA - 2,7 mln m3. Please note that this also potentially includes capacity for fuel oil, expectedly according to the percentages mentioned above.

Rob Luijendijk Edward, thanks for your positive feedback on our website.
Initially, the storage fee would be based on cost-based pricing, also taking occupancy levels into consideration. These calculated fees are then compared with existing fees in the relevant storage market or, if this is absent, estimated on the basis of a virtual supply/demand situation. This latter can also be achieved by discussions/negotiations with potential clients.

Good luck.

2004 years ago | Reply Marked as answer

Cezz Thanks Krien,

Would you have any idea if this varies for crude oil, petrochemical products and fuel?

3 years ago | Reply

Krien Petrochemicals are much more expensive than crude oil or petroleum products. Also the tanksizes differ. The rates mentioned in the article are for crude oil / cpp. All rates change with different conditions, so this average is for a medium long contract and at average throughput, any diversion from that will have an effect on the rates.

Tank Farm Project Cost

1368 years ago by Tsuwa of RtHE Consult | Your answer | Read full discussion

Stefan Dear Tsuma:

It is not an easy answer, and without conducting a study on the required facility, no one would be able to tell you with certainty. Even the price for one single tank can vary a lot i.e. what product would be stored, single or double walled, single or double shell, type of roof, are mixers inside, does it have to be heated, fire fighting equipment ... on top of that, you are mentioning jetty and a bitumen facility. Unless you spend some amount of money co conduct a study, you would not be able to put a budget on it. We are not talking about one single tank but a tank farm.

Hope it helps,
Stefan

Rowland Dicks I agree with Stefan's comments and would like to add a few other dimensions to the discussion. The terrain would affect the total cost as well as the length of pipeline, whilst the size of tank that would meet the proposed client needs is needed to add to the costing protocols. I don't think that there is enough information supplied relating to the question to make any more comments.

J.Veenma, Independent consultant at Veenma Tankterminal Consultancy The amount of water which can be present in a tank that stores crude oil can be anything between zero and a few hundred tons. During loading water can be present in the cargo loaded.
So after discharging the cargo at the storage terminal they will receive this water in their storage tank.
When the ship discharges to the shore tank samples are taken from the cargo received by the terminal and in the laboratory one can define the amount of water and sediments received.

How easy is it to convert bulk storage containers for use in storing other products?

For instance, if a company was storing large amounts of chemicals and petroleum, but those contracts came to an end, how viable is it to use those containers for ethanol storage? Please do not limit your answer to the above example.

3 years ago by Dave Grothouse | Your answer | Read full discussion

Rob Luijendijk Possible but not necessarily easy. Moreover, a tank container stores about 25/30 m³ which is often not enough for bulk quantities. Important is to clean the tank container to safeguard the integrity of the next product. What plays a role as well is the the type of authorosation of the tank container to carry products with different hazardous properties. Tank containers (like rail tank cars or tank trucks) are used for intermediate storage but usually not for a prolonged period. For bulk storage of liquid storage the services of a tank terminal, some of which have small tanks as well, are the best and safest solution.

Terminal Automation

What significance does terminal automation plays in terminals and oil depots?

-204804642390 seconds ago by John Casper | Your answer | Read full discussion

Rob Luijendijk Dear John, please note that there are various "levels" of terminal automation; eg from a relatively simple motor-operated valve to a fully integrated and computerized terminal automation package including administrative functions. In very general terms, terminal automation has a positive effect on personnel requirements, it may enhance the efficiency at a terminal, and, last but not least it may also have a positive effect on safe operations and terminal intergity.

What is % of product loss in Mogas tanks acceptable when stored in Floating roof tanks?

Also what could be the reasons for this losses?

I found your answer informative about the global mix.

What about the mix between captive and independent storage within the USA?

4 years ago by Donald StPierre | Your answer | Read full discussion

Rob Luijendijk We estimated the global dedicated tank storage capacity (notably refinery storage capacity) on the basis of the global refinery capacity and derived from this number an average front-end storage capacity (crude storage capacity) and an average back-end (the storage capacity required to hold refinery products) on the basis of 30 days front-end crude and 45 days back-end products. We calculated this on a global basis only. We did not do this on a country-by-country basis.

Can you tell me the exact meaning of the term independent storage?

Does it mean the commercail storage, SPR ,the sum of two storages or another storage? i went to the EIA, and found that there are some difference between the figure you gave and EID did.

4 years ago by Zhen Zhu | Your answer | Read full discussion

Maria Eschbach Independent storage terminals are operated by service-oriented companies that own and operate tank storage terminals purely for third party customers. They do not hold title to any of the product stored in the tanks.

The main characteristics of independent tank storage are:

- The owner of a terminal is in principal a different legal entity from the owner(s) of the product(s) stored;

- The owner of the storage maintains a portfolio of clients; some may be associated companies;

- The terminal owner maintains an independent Profit/Loss account.

As far as we know the EIA publishes the storage numbers for crude oil, ethanol and oil products capacity in operation (excluding idle capacity) and net available shell storage capacity at US terminals and refineries. We publish the total tank storage capacity at the terminals for crude, oil products, chemicals and vegetable oil, including idle capacity as well.

In any way, whichever source you may use, the total storage capacity figures will always vary as it is quite difficult to track down the real situation.

Expectations for 2011

What does 2011 look like for growth and why?

4 years ago by Dale Bohman of FMC Technologies | Your answer | Read full discussion

Rob Luijendijk The general (global) picture is that currently the demand for tank storage capacity outstrips the supply. Obviously this is most apparent in global hot spots: big oil ports, along coast lines of strongly emerging markets but there is a modest but growing demand for storage infrastructure as well in secondary locations. There is a fair number of smaller and local reasons (varying product specifications, shallow ports) that together constitute good reasons for regional storage operations but the global trend is fuelled by 1) the growing global imbalances between product availability and supply and 2) the fact that there are nowadays more players on the supply-side who are all securing strategic positions (= tank storage) along the value chain from production to consumption.

4 years ago | Reply Marked as answer

Hans Vrijenhoef I agree with your sense towards independancy and strategic interest by producers/traders of big bulk products like crude/ fuels etc.
I also sense a trend towards decentralised smalle scale production asking as well for more storage, but rather smaller sized. so for me, independancy and decentralised are key words in the near future.

What is the percent of independent tank storage vs captive tank storage in the world?

Has it changed in the past 3-5 years?

4 years ago by Chris Ryan | Your answer | Read full discussion

Rob Luijendijk There is no exact answer to your question because there is no clear line between independent and captive storage. Also captive storage capacity is sometimes made available to thrird parties on a temporary basis. Generally speaking however the split is 80% (captive) and 20% (independent). The overall picture is that over the years the independent section has grown faster than the captive section. We expect that this trend will continue.

What are the common business models for storage terminals/bulk plants?

2. What is a typical cost structure of a storage terminal/bulk plant?
3. What are the key success factors for a terminal/bulk plant player?
4. What other assets are natural assets to co-own with terminals/bulk plants?

4 years ago by Rami Abu-Rmaileh of McKinsey & Company | Your answer | Read full discussion

Rob Luijendijk The high-level answers are:
1. This depends on the main function of the terminal. The basic functions are 1) storage terminals, 2) transload terminals (pipeline terminals) but most terminals combine these two functions in widely varying degrees. The revenue for 1 comes from storage fees plus additional income for extra services (eg heating, transhipment, etc), the revenue for 2 is often related to quantities transloaded (eg from pipe to ship, RTC to ship).
2. Main cost items are personnel, maintenance, utilities/energy, third-party services (eg tank cleaning), HQSE related cost. Beyond the direct ops cost, depreciation/amortisation is a significant item.
3. Quality services (the right quality for the right price), product integrity, proper housekeeping, environment consciousness, safety.
4. Depends on type of terminal/operations (see 1). Adequate jetty infrastructure, rail/road racks, pipelines, blending/mixing facilities, warehouses/repackaging facilities. A truly independent terminal operates tanks and supporting infrastructures only.

Emmanuel Polman Importance in the business model is the risk sharing strategy between the private operator and the port authority. The port / terminal institutional model will determine the mutual level of involvement in investments in the land & nautical infrastructure, super structures, tools & equipments, operations, etc. It will determine the financing structure, sources of financing and the future operational expenses etc.
I would be happy to elaborate if you wish.

What is a rough estimate of the average annual EBITDA/barrel of storage capacity?

And what is the standard deviation to that? For crude and for refined product?

4 years ago by David Kaplan | Your answer | Read full discussion

Rob Luijendijk There is not one correct answer to your question as there are may variables (terminal size, throughput, type of terminals, ops costs, automation, types of products, etc.) that have a significant effect on EBITDA levels. What can be said is that the independent tank terminals industry, notably the oil storage sector, is a profitable activity where EBITDA’s of 40 to 50% of gross revenues are being achieved. However, there are examples where 60+% is recorded but we rather see that as an exception. Currently there is a healthy market demand for (oil) storage, both in the mature as well as in the emerging markets. The chemical storage market is currently slower because of the slacker global market dynamics.

How do you do the inspection of oil storage tanks?

What technology do you use for finding out if oil tanks are leaking?

5 years ago by TankTerminals.com | Your answer | Read full discussion

Captain Leo Kloet Following is the procedure which will be used for a safe and efficient tank inspection program.

1. Tank will emptied and taken out of service. If it is a crude oil tank, it is recommendable to have a sludge reduction program in place e.g. additional mixing and light crude oils.
2. All pipeline connections to the tank will be disconnected and provided with blind flanges.
3. Tank will be cleaned by experienced contractors.
4. After the cleaning and oxygen/gas measurements, a first visual inspection will take place.
5. In case, a coal tar epoxy has been used, this layer has to be removed by blasting. ( N.B. the use of coal tar epoxy is since several years forbidden!).
6. A bottom scan will be carried out via the MFL method. This will a complete scan/inspection of the bottom, including the annular ring area.
7. Also the floating roof will be measured on topside, bottom side, sleeves, welding etc.
8. The thickness of the tankwall will be measured.
9. The roundness of the tank will be measured for an optimal functioning of the seal of the floating roof.
10. There is the possibility to measure condition of the tank bottom while tank is in operational condition with the use of equipment which has been positioned outside the tank. This is called “acoustic emission measurement of the tank bottom”.

Stratification detection

Hi, we have several tanks where stratification is a problem. Is it possible to buy an instrument that can detect stratification?

5 years ago by TankTerminals.com | Your answer | Read full discussion

Johan Sandberg Some servo operated level gauges have this capability. In particular the Servo Gauge from Enraf has the ability to make a 10 point profile over the height of the liquid. Clearly, the application of such gauges has to be on “clean” products so that the displacer does not become contaminated. When the profile is uploaded to the host system it can be manually viewed as a graph to see if the tank is stratified. In addition a package called VTW from MHT Technology can automatically analyse the profile to give an alarm if stratification is detected.

Jon Watson The DM 250.2 portable digital density transmitter may prove a useful tool.
This is simply a vibating element density meter fitted at the end of a measuring tape. The operator can then lower this into the tank and capture density and temperature data (and convert automatically to density at 15C) at different depths. The tape extension, temperature, observed and base densities are then logged and can be transferred by Bluetooth to a portable (with belt clip) data logger and subsequently via bluetooth to a PC.
Typical density accuracy is 0.5kg/m3.
This one instrument can be used with a variety of different tanks and different tank conents. Where a density difference is found indicating an interface wetween the two levels at which readings were taken, the operator can then take further readings at intermediate levels to idenify the interface, typically to within 10cm.
The instrument is popular with operators who routinely have to otherwise take top middle and bottom samples and measure with a hydrometer as they have less equipment to carry round and say that it is safer when climbing tanks when less encumbered.
