First bio-ethanol plant to be built in the Port of Amsterdam
AMSTERDAM, the Netherlands, Feb. 3, 2006 – Blue Ocean Associates plans to produce bio-ethanol for environmentally friendly car fuel in the Port of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, starting in the second half of 2007. This has been outlined in an option agreement signed by Blue Ocean Associates and the City of Amsterdam.
New plant in the Amerikahaven.
Blue Ocean Associates has signed an option agreement to lease upto 43 acres (17,5 hectares) of land in the Amerika harbour in the Port of Amsterdam to build a new plant for this purpose and will employ 50 people. The British company will invest about EUR 90 million in the plant and in a small power plant needed to optimize the production process. Work on the construction of the new plant is to begin by the end of 2006, and the facility is expected to be operational in the second half of 2007. The plant will turn agricultural products into bio-ethanol. The bio-ethanol will be added to gasoline (petrol) to produce an eco-friendly car-fuel mix (5% bio-ethanol and 95% gasoline).
Amsterdam as an energy port
Alderman Mark van der Horst, responsible for port affairs, comments: ”The Port of Amsterdam does its utmost to operate in an environmentally friendly fashion, and the production of clean car fuel fits in very well with this objective. Equally important, adding ethanol to gasoline will become mandatory across Euro[Andersson1] pe in the future. So it’s essential for the Port of Amsterdam to be home to an ethanol plant. That will further underpin our position as an energy port and as a global player in the storage and processing of oil products.”
Process and products
Each year, the new bio-ethanol plant will use 375,000 metric tons of grain to turn into 110,000 tons of ethanol and 120,000 tons of cattle food. The new facility will include a small power plant. The surplus heat from the power plant will provide the bio-ethanol plant with energy. This approach will boost energy efficiency and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
Blue Ocean
Blue Ocean Associates is trading in oil products – such as gasoline and diesel oil – around the world. In the United Kingdom, the subsidiary Futura Petroleum Ltd is a major importer and distributor of high quality gasoline and diesel oil in particular. Blue Ocean Associates is already for many years an important customer of the tank-storage companies in the Port of Amsterdam.
Sustainable and innovative
The Port of Amsterdam promotes innovative activities and sustainable production. Among many other examples, ships with Green Wards receive a discount on the port fees paid in Amsterdam. Moreover, innovative barge-based projects such as AMSbarge (using the self-loading barge the MS Mercurius Amsterdam) help reduce air pollution and traffic congestion. Last year, the Port of Amsterdam was the first port in the Netherlands to receive the PERS (Port Environmental Review System) certificate, which the European Ecoports organization awards to ports whose environmental-management systems meet certain criteria.
